APD Hires at McK

Let me first say that it is great to have so many readers who participate in the blog. I got an anonymous tip from an APD who is doing an internship with McKinsey this summer. From what he/she says it looks like business is pretty good at McKinsey right now and they are looking to hire some new APD associates for 2010. They are asking around for recommendations for people who might be interested in starting sooner rather than later. I'm guessing that they are asking current employees for recommendations because it adds an extra layer of legitimacy if you come recommended as opposed to those who just randomly apply through the website.

That being said, it might be a good idea for those of you with contacts to see if they can recommend you to a recruiter. Additionally, it might be a good idea to contact your favorite McKinsey recruiter yourself and let them know you heard they may be looking to build up their APD pool for 2010 starts and let them know you are interested.

McKinsey is also offering another summer program in addition to the Healthcare and Engineering Insights...this is an insight program for those of you who might be interested in positions with McKinsey in Asia.

  1. Hi CC,

Thanks for the info! I missed the opportunity to apply for the US office Insight program. Do you think it is a good idea to participate in this summer program and then apply to the US-based offices? I don't want to hurt my credibility by applying to the Asia Insight program but not to a full-time Asia position later.

  2. Hi TT,

That's a good question. If there is ANY chance that you would be willing to work in an Asian office than I would suggest applying. I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world to apply to the Asian insight and chose to work full time in the US.

  3. I have a question about the hiring cycle for McKinsey and BCG (and other major firms). I have heard that they do one major cycle of hiring in October-December, primarily following the business school schedule, and people who are offered positions by December/January are expected to start the following September. However, I was also told that I should apply for a position in August as an advanced degree candidate. Does this mean that the position start dates are different for MBAs vs. advanced degree holders?

I am hoping to finish my PhD in December 2010, but I may have to push it back to May 2011, depending on how my research progresses. I would hate to go through the entire process only to learn that they want me to start two weeks from the time they offer me a position, while I'm still finishing up my dissertation work. If anyone has any insight into the hiring process for people still working on their advanced degrees, I would appreciate it.

  4. I think the start dates may be a little less flexible for APD candidates for at least one simple reason. All PhD hires are expected to do a mini-MBA type training which is usually a 3 week course on business fundamentals. This class is only offered maybe 2 or 3 times a year and corresponds with the start dates for APDs.

If you are upfront and realistic about your dissertation work and when you expect to finish you shouldn't have any surprises with a start date. On the flip side, it is probably helpful once you get an offer to make sure your PhD boss knows and respects your time line for leaving to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible.

  5. As a follow-up for TT...I also think that Insight Asia might be good for a few other reasons, even if you are planning to look for a full time position in the US. 1) you may want to do some work there during your career, whether it be a year long stint or just a project that is interesting to you. 2) You can sell yourself as being interested in starting in the US and perhaps moving to Asia someday...this at least gives you a foot in the door and helps you differentiate yourself some 3)it puts you on the McKinsey radar and expands your network.

  6. AM-
If you are like me and almost every other PhD that I know, your'e final experiments/dissertation writing/editing will take MUCH longer than you think!

  7. Thanks CC! It seems a really good idea and I will apply to Insight Asia. Honestly speaking, comparing to american PhD applicants I may have less advantage due to the language barrier. Even though I don't have any problem communicating and socializing with people, occasionally there are topics that I have no idea about and find difficult to follow up in a conversation. I do prefer working in the states after graduation, but I would also like to travel to Asia for projects since my parents are still there. However, moving back to Asia for a year or longer might not work for me.

Hope to hear from the Bridge to BCG today. I have not heard anything from them yet. Good luck to all that applied to it!

  8. As another clarification, it looks like if you apply for a full time position for 2011 right now in the US that you will then not be eligible for the Insight Asia program, although it doesn't say anything about the reverse scenario. This according to an Insight Asia applicant who was also invited to interview in the fall for a 2011 start date.

  9. Hello all,

I just wanted to second what CC said about McK still hiring for 2010. I sent a quick e-mail to a recruiter that I have been in contact with and they said...

"We are still looking for 2010 hires so if you are interested, I encourage you to submit your application in the near future."

There was more but this is the relevant stuff. Good luck!!

  10. Glad to see the information I am putting out there is coming in handy! Hopefully we can get a few readers to land an off cycle interview or two and may a job!

  11. One thing to say about the Insight Asia program. If you get selected to go to this workshop, you can only interview in the asia offices.

  12. If true, the above point is quite important and not emphasized clearly from the insight information provided by McK. You should probably clarify with your recruiter if interested.

  13. It is true. I interviewed with McK for insight healthcare, and since I put down Beijing as one of my office choices, they asked me whether I would go to insight asia instead. And I have to choose between insight Asia and interviewing in U.S. offices.

  14. Does anyone know if you get rejected for Insight Science and Engineering, can you still apply for Insight Asia? Mckinsey usually recommends 18month before you reapply. I'm not sure if this rule applies also to different programs.

  15. I think BCG might still have spaces for 2010 class. If you're ready to start it may be worth looking up a recruiter, especially if you're willing to relocate.

  16. Can you elaborate more on the BCG 2010 class? Willing to relocate means some of the less popular offices are still looking for new hires? I personally don't have much preference on location, so I wonder what these offices would be.
