Moving Forward

As it looks as consulting recruiting season is starting to wind down, I am guessing that my posts will become less frequent. That being said, I am anxious to hear updates from those of you who moved on to the next rounds and those of you who have/will receive offers.

I'm sure everyone will be interested to hear where you all are ending up. As for me, in the short term, I am going to get back to some science that I have neglected and keep my options open. Whether it is consulting next year, the pharma industry, or biotech, only time will tell.

I will keep posting things that I think might be relevant as I come across them. If you have any ideas, let me know.

  1. Dear Considering,

I would like to congratulate you on your blog and insightful comments.
Thank you for all the information. I clearly haven't put nearly as much time into it as you !
I am applying to the McK London office, where first round (Problem Solving Test) starts just this week and I'm in.
Another season is about to start ...

    Kind Regards and good luck,

    LSE Student.

  2. The season for consulting internship selection just started. I'm wondering if posdocs are eligible for summer opportunities. You might check it out.

  4. Not sure if postdocs can do internships. I know we are starting to prepare graduate students for internship interviews right now. For those of you who aren't aware, a very high percentage of those individuals who complete internships with these organizations are offered full time positions, so it is something you should look into if you are serious about consulting.

As for me, postdocs may be able to apply, although my particular position won't allow for me to take the time away from my research. I have full time technicians that rely on me being here on a daily basis and the collaborative environment also isn't conducive for a person leaving for a long period of time.

  5. Thanks for the complement, Tom. I'm glad you enjoyed the content. I am willing to add whatever you think folks might be interested in. My mind is a little lacking on content right now, but as things come up, I will be sure to post.

  6. Also...the student from LES...please shoot me an email sometime about the recruiting process in the UK. I am interested to see how it might be different in different regions around the world.

If there are dramatic differences, I would like to make readers aware so that my blog doesn't mislead them in any way!

  7. In Switzerland McKinsey recruitment for APD is done in one day. You have test and 5-6 interviews on this day.

  8. I did my 2nd round interview in NYC exactly a week ago. I just got a phone call from McKinsey with good news. It was definitely surprising. I thought I did well on Personal Experience, but not so good on case interview. Especially the last case, I thought I totally screwed it. Surprisingly, they thought my case interview was good and my PEI needed to improve.

Your blog definitely helped me a lot. I really appreciate all your effort. And hopefully I can do well in the final round~~~

  9. Hi Considering,

Your blog is extremely helpful! Thanks a lot for sharing every step of the way.

I'm looking a a junior consulting position in Paris. I have the feeling that in France, in general, you can very likely to get your first round interview if you have a contact inside the firm. Normally this is done through the alumni networks of the school you went to. The alumni networks of some well-established grandes écoles can be like a mafia sometimes: they are so powerful in some companies that they hire generations after generations of graduates from the same school.

From my contacts in Paris, BCG, for example, has a lot of students of Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Centrale. They also tend to hire French students only. McKinsey and Booz, especially the later, are more open-minded and have a more international environment regarding consultants and projects.

Also, consulting firms here tend to recrute all year round rather than having a fixed recruiting season...
